The Gunners controlled the contest for long periods at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and repeatedly threatened the Napoli defence. Their 26 attempts represent Arsenal’s highest total in a Champions League match since records began in 2003-04, while no Napoli side has previously faced as many efforts in the competition. Arsenal also registered 13 attempts before half-time, underlining the extent of their early pressure.
Yet Arteta’s players were forced to remain patient after wasting several promising opportunities. Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino were among those unable to convert chances before the interval, while further openings went begging after the restart. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 75th minute when Ødegaard struck from the edge of the area, finding the net via the post after a swift combination involving substitute Christos Tzolis.
The captain’s goal capped another influential display during an excellent start to the campaign. Opta records show Ødegaard created six chances, made 120 touches and completed five passes that broke Napoli’s defensive line. His latest decisive contribution also continued a run of four goals in his last five matches.
Defensively, Arsenal again demonstrated the resilience that has become a defining feature of Arteta’s side. They restricted Napoli to only five shots and maintained another clean sheet, with new arrival Ezri Konsa starting alongside Gabriel in central defence. Opta notes Arsenal have now recorded 20 Champions League clean sheets in 40 matches under Arteta, four more than any other side since 2023-24.
The result gives Arsenal three points from a demanding opening fixture and extends their strong early-season momentum. Attention now turns to Sunderland away on 12 September before the Champions League campaign resumes against Lille at Emirates Stadium on 13 October.
